MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
March 16, 2009
Dear Human Services Supporter:
Your advocacy for human services is urgently needed!
In his FY 2010 Advertised Budget, County Executive Anthony Griffin has proposed a total of $31 million in cuts to human services, about 29 percent of the overall total of $106.4 million in reductions in all County services and programs. All County human services agencies will be affected. Furthermore, an estimated $6.2 million (about 20% of the total human services reductions) in cuts will affect programs currently operated by nonprofit or volunteer organizations.
It is important to let the Board of Supervisors know about your concerns. As you know, reducing funding and eliminating programs will undermine the effective efforts that are currently helping low income families and individuals live healthy, safe, and productive lives. In these times of severe economic stress, people may lose services when they need them the most.
Your voice on behalf of human services and our vulnerable populations should be heard. We advocates need to speak out in large numbers to try to persuade the Board of Supervisors to restore at least some of the funding to meet critical needs. During this budget crisis, even preventing further reductions would be a victory!
I urge your attention to the following attached items:
